American footballer David Testo has left the cabinet.
The former Montreal Impact midfielder and Vancouver Whitecaps CBC Radio-Canada said that his colleagues knew he was gay and accepted, but was afraid to go public until now.
"It's like carrying around a secret, you know, and load the luggage and never allowed to just be yourself," he told CBC Testo.
The 30-year-old from North Carolina says he feels more confident and mature and ready to speak openly.
Impact Testo joined in 2007, but is no contract and will not be back with the team to their MLS debut next year. Testo previously played for the Whitecaps, the Columbus Crew and the Richmond Kickers.
"Statement of David Testo is, in fact, very personal," said Montreal Impact President Joey Saputo said in a statement. "We knew the direction of David before he join our club in Vancouver in 2007."
"During his career in Montreal has always been a professional and dedicated to this club on and off the field," he said. "His decision to go public must have been a difficult year and we respect that."
David Testo, who played professional football for the Montreal Impact and Vancouver Whitecaps, left the cabinet Thursday, saying he wished he had revealed his homosexuality before.
"Living the life of a professional athlete and being gay is very hard," said Testo, 30 French-language CBC Radio-Canada. "It's like carrying around a secret, you know, and load the luggage and simply never be allowed to be yourself."
Testo said his teammates were aware of their sexual orientation and support.
"I'm gay. I did not choose this. This is just what I am," he told CBC Testo. "I really regret not having spoken publicly before. It's something I struggled with my entire life and career."
Testo, a native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, played for the impact from 2007 until he was released last month. He was team MVP in 2009.
